Apart from shopping from local resources and fresh foods, I found that Trader Joe's is a great help. I've been meaning to think about it anyway, great time to try when there is the support of other people.

Annieanniehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16188885786792789010noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6267952025207045355.post-7903957679775592022009-02-03T10:43:00.000-05:002009-02-03T10:43:00.000-05:00I hope to see more folks signing up soon. Myra, I agree entirely with your sentiment that the challenge is in provoking thought, and I believe it is also about raising conversation just as it has done in your family and beyond. To me it is about raising awareness as well. Two years ago I barely gave a thought to corn syrup in what I was eating and drinking. Someone brought it to my attention, and it lead me to greater awareness on a much greater scale of food issues. To me, this challenge is about offering that opportunity to others, be it people reading this blog, or the teachers, colleagues, friends or family members of people reading this blog. Thank you, and I hope you will all continue to share your experiences, conversations, and discoveries over this month.Indy Winter Farmers Markethttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13671571802585823304noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6267952025207045355.post-36119877173403552982009-02-01T21:40:00.000-05:002009-02-01T21:40:00.000-05:00Corn syrup is not the sort of food you think of as...Corn syrup is not the sort of food you think of as thought provoking, but it has done just that at our house.
We already avoided most corn syrup and a quick check of pantries and freezers this morning revealed no hidden surprises. A few expected culprits that have slipped in will have to be addressed – ketchup and graham crackers. After a family discussion we have committed to the challenge in varying degrees. The sticking point was eating outside of home, specifically school for our children ages 3,5 and 8. They attend a school where lunch and snacks are provided. I offered to send things in for lunch and help them navigate the choices. The oldest was quick to decline. Our kindergartner is giving it a try and already asking about whether various things might contain corn syrup. She tried to catch the adults asking about coffee, then following up with “what about flavored coffee?” The youngest is talking about it, but is unlikely to forgo some food related activities with his preschool peers e.g. birthday muffins. So while all five of us are fully committed at home and in situations where parents are with children, only 1 of 3 children is making an attempt in independent settings. We see already that our conversations are going to touch people well beyond our family table – preschool teachers, in-laws, friends at a Super Bowl party, work colleagues…for us this challenge is not about giving something up or avoiding it, the challenge is in provoking thought.

Myra & TaylorMyrahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18379133830851065702noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6267952025207045355.post-1701030819418155742009-01-31T20:03:00.000-05:002009-01-31T20:03:00.000-05:00We're up for the challenge! We're already H...We're up for the challenge!

We're already High Fructose Corn Syrup-free, but today Todd had a sweets craving and bought some macaroons. I read the label and lo & behold the 9th ingredient was corn syrup! In the future we're certainly going to scrutinize all labels more closely before we buy.

So far we can't get our 16 yr old son to commit to the challenge, although he is making an effort to cut back on soda.

We love to eat locally, are actively involved in Slow Food Indy, operate a small vegetable/herb farm & CSA program in Carmel Indiana, and participate in local farmer's markets.

Laura, thanks for spearheading this. We're sure others are up for the challenge as well.

Todd & Kathleen Jameson
(ages 48 & 46)Jamesonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07647366520131572918noreply@blogger.com
